Review of Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk Luxury Hotel

The Thompson Hotel in San Antonio is really fancy, stylish, and nicely decorated. It even smells amazing inside.

Just had a blast at the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk hotel, part of Hyatt’s boutique lineup. It’s a chic place with modern vibes, high ceilings, and even celebrity-run restaurants. Absolutely loved the luxury feel!

Review of the Thompson San Antonio River-walk

Review of the Thompson San Antonio

The Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk nails it in the location department. It’s right on the Riverwalk, avoiding the overly touristy spots. Just a quick 12-minute walk to the Alamo and the main stretch of the Riverwalk. And a snappy 5-minute drive to the Historic Pearl district. Food enthusiasts, take note: the Pearl’s restaurants are a must-visit – check out a guide for the hottest spots.

Arrival

Pulled up to the Thompson, and the valet guy wasn’t just friendly; he was top-notch. Made me feel like it was an honor for him to handle my mom SUV with its french fry crumbs and park it underground. Spoiler alert: It probably wasn’t an honor; he’s just really good at his job.

Check-in

Front desk experience was top-notch too. Met one of the friendliest front desk staff ever, who turned out to be the manager. He had helped open the Thompson Austin before this, so he had some serious commitment to making guests’ stays lovely. Asked about a late check-out, and boom – got 3 bonus hours, no negotiation needed.

Little Extra

The manager even tipped me off about a water dispenser issue on my floor and promised loads of water bottles instead.

Staff quality at a Thompson Hotel is no joke – paying a bit more than a regular Hyatt feels like getting the royal treatment. Quite the break from the usual!

Room:

Booked a standard king room, and it was a stunner. The design mirrors the rich history of the Alamo city with deep blues and greens reflecting the riverwalk’s significance.

Texas-style leather and suede, and classy wide-plank hardwood floors.

Bathroom

Spa-inspired vibes with marble floors, waterfall shower heads, and lush bath and shower products.

Beds

Oh, those beds are heaven! Sferra linens, custom-made leather headboards, and flattering lighting for that “artful residential feel.”

Amenities

Standard room comes with a locally-stocked bar, plush robe and slippers, blackout curtains for the best sleep, a 55-inch flat-screen TV, and a Nespresso machine for a quick caffeine fix.

Even for someone not used to hotel stays, this room was a true treat. I wanted to explore San Antonio, but I also wanted to bask in the luxury of those linens, the beautiful decor, the giant TV, and the amazing night of sleep. The rooms at The Thompson San Antonio are just perfect.

Restaurants At The Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk

Restaurants At The Thompson

Thompson Hotels really knows how to do food right.

(And just to put it out there, I’ve tried every restaurant at the Austin Thompson hotel, and I can confidently say that the chefs and restaurants at Thompson hotels are absolutely killing it.)

Now, let’s take a sneak peek into the delightful world of food and beverages at Thompson San Antonio.

Landrace

Landrace, the American restaurant at Thompson San Antonio, is a culinary gem crafted by James Beard Award-nominated chef Steve McHugh (of Cured and Luminaire fame). Here, the spotlight is on Texan ingredients, ensuring a true taste of the Lone Star State. Open every day from 7 am to 10 pm, it’s not just delicious but also super convenient for all your dining needs.

For breakfast, dive into classics like wagyu beef steak & eggs, a goat cheese omelet with asparagus, or avocado toast with an optional poached egg. If you’re leaning towards lighter options, they’ve got you covered with a “rise and shine smoothie” or a refreshing yogurt bowl.

Come lunch and dinner, beef lovers are in for a treat. Given the Texas inspiration, Chef Steve has a special knack for all things meat. Not a beef enthusiast? Fear not! Landrace offers an array of delightful salads, gulf-inspired dishes like red snapper crudo and grilled BBQ oysters, and a tempting selection of sweet and cheese plates for dessert. There’s something for every palate at Landrace.

The Moon’s Daughters

The 20th-floor rooftop bar and restaurant at The Thompson San Antonio could easily be its crown jewel. Picture this: unobstructed views over the city of San Antonio, incredible cocktails, and a surprising menu featuring both small bites and larger main courses.

Review of the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk Hotel:

Opening in the afternoon and keeping the doors wide open until late (midnight or 2 am, but do check their official hours for brunch offerings, etc.), this spot, while not as easily accessible as Landrace, is definitely worth a visit during your stay at The Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk.

The menu takes a dip into the Mediterranean, offering delights like lamb ragu with hummus and fried mint, seared branzino with Israeli couscous and basil, and a Greek lamb burger with two smashed lamb patties, tzatziki, local tomato (and fries, of course).

While the food is undeniably good, it’s the views that will truly captivate you. Even if you’ve already had dinner elsewhere (considering the plethora of great restaurants in San Antonio), try to swing by The Moon’s Daughters at The Thompson San Antonio for a late-night cocktail on the outdoor deck.

A small yet crucial note: Be prepared for potential strong winds at certain times of the year up there on the roof, so bringing a hairband is a wise move.

Cenote Pool Deck

Cenote Pool Deck

Don’t overlook the Cenote Pool Deck at The Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk—it’s anything but an afterthought. Sure, it’s a pool-side spot with burgers, fries, and cocktails, but when you’re soaking in the sunny vibes of SA and craving a seriously good lunch without stepping off the property, this poolside gem has got your back.

Pool at the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk:

The cocktail lineup spans from craft (try the Pepino Pecante made with serrano-infused el Jimador, Ferrand dry curacao cointreau, cucumber agave, and firewater tincture) to classic (frosé, anyone?).

For those feeling a bit peckish, there are nibbles like chips and salsa or a Caesar salad. But if you’re after something more substantial, the handhelds section boasts a killer hot dog, a beef burger torta that’s intriguing, and a classy lobster roll if you’re in the mood for a touch of sophistication. This poolside restaurant is a solid choice for a delightful lunch without leaving the comfort of the property.
