If you live in Texas (or you’ve lived here for at least a minute), you’ve consumed a lot of breakfast tacos. This is just a fact.

No matter if you’re a meat eater, vegetarian or vegan, gluten-free, or follow basically any other diet or lifestyle choice (keto tortillas are a thing!), you’ve eaten breakfast tacos. They’re a staple here. And if you live in San Antonio,

I’m here to tell you that there’s one spot that you really need to try if you haven’t yet: Con Huevos Tacos.

Huevos Tacos

It’s been a staple in the San Antonio breakfast tacos scene since 2019. Chef Hugo Garcia opened it in a little stand-alone restaurant that used to be a kolache shop. The crowds haven’t stopped forming, but that’s just what happens when you serve really good food at a reasonable price with a friendly staff.

(Btw, if you’re unfamiliar with the meaning of the slang term “con huevos,” I’m just going to say it: it’s the equivalent of saying “balls to the walls” in English. But in a more endearing way, it means “with heart” or “with bravery.”)

This cozy little shop serves the same homemade tortillas that chef Garcia was constantly craving from his grandma’s kitchen in Mexico. The taco ingredients are simple, hearty, and perfect.

There’s a small walk-up window on the exterior of the bright blue building. Place your order, take a seat on the covered patio, and your order of tacos will be brought out to you pretty quickly.

On a personal note, I love the branding. Con Huevos Tacos wraps each warm breakfast taco in foil and places a sticker on the outside to denote the type of taco you just ordered. It’s a sweet, simple little touch that really doesn’t take too long or cost too much, but it elevates this place just slightly and establishes itself as something different from all the other breakfast tacos restaurants in San Antonio.

The menu starts with the specialty breakfast tacos. They are, quite frankly, where it’s at. Order these! They’re all titled with a single name (like, “Vicki” and “Carmen” and “Irma”) and the “Licha” is what I ordered on my first visit, mostly because it comes with refried beans which are my favorite taco filling right now.

The tortillas really are that good. I’d come back again and again just for those thick, warm, homemade flour tortillas. But the fillings are delicious as well. The papas con chorizo were cut evenly (thus, cooked evenly) and perfectly soft, flavored with the spice and redness of chorizo. The salty beans and the melty cheddar cheese were all swirled together into one creamy bite of heaven. Seriously…this taco was so, so good.

There are classic breakfast tacos on the menu as well (I’m getting the carne guisada next time), as well as quesadillas, chilaquiles bowls, and small plates like flautas and soup. Beverages include agua fresca, bottled soda, and coffee.

There are plenty of fantastic tacos to try in San Antonio. I get it…the options are seemingly endless. And while I have my fair share of favorites, including these life-changing tacos al pastor and some excellent puffy tacos, I just feel that it’s my duty, as a San Antonio foodie, to make sure that everyone reading this article drives to Con Huevos Tacos in San Antonio and orders a taco or two.
